A Home For Three Generations

Our clients Myrna and Murray had a bright idea. They wanted to build a new, accessible “in-laws” apartment onto their single-family home of Lexington. The addition would solve several problems. It would allow our clients to stay put in the neighborhood where they’d lived for thirty years even though climbing stairs to their bedroom was no longer desirable. Once they moved into the new addition, they could turn the original house over to their daughter’s family. That would allow her to raise her kids in a familiar community with excellent schools. Both nuclear families saw additional benefits: security, economy, and the ability to easily spend time together.

With the construction complete, grandmother’s house is now “over the porch and through the door.” The new space is entirely handicapped accessible. Carport entries, kitchen and bath doors are wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair. The layout is on grade. Material choices in the addition, including red clapboards and timber trusses, reflect finishes in from the main residence.

Converting a house to three-generation use often requires resolving some zoning issues. If you are interested in doing a similar project, contact us to discuss the possibilities.
