International Style

When our clients purchased this Westwood ranch in 2000, they were slightly ahead of a trend toward reclaiming and celebrating mid-century modern homes. Unfortunately, the house had been neglected for years and required an extensive renovation to bring it back to life. Our clients—an active family of four—also needed to add living space on a difficult triangular lot.

We expanded the house by converting its single-car garage wing into a home office and music studio. The space is well suited for this function because it provides privacy and acoustic separation from the main house. To add drama and prominence to this repurposed space, we raised its shed roof and added exposed beams and clerestory windows. The music studio/office now offers an abundance of natural light and views of a Japanese rock garden in the entry courtyard. A new 3-car garage and breezeway buffers the yard from a busy street and completes the edge of the car court.

Significant changes were also made inside the house, including a new master suite, powder room and kitchen. Our primary goal for the kitchen was to expand it out of the poorly lit utilitarian core of the house. We opened it up to the dining room and views of the rear garden with a pair of custom polycarbonate and stainless sliding doors. Acid-green accents, warm wooden cabinets, and gleaming appliances brighten the room further. The space also features a custom stainless shelving unit that supports the cook top. At night, crisp lighting and a playful array of colors animate the house. See the house in Inspired House magazine.
