Penthouse Aglow
The young owners of this classic South End brick bow front duplex had one goal: Turn their 1,700 square feet into the perfect place to entertain.
The bones of the design include a new guest bedroom and bath, a gleaming chef’s kitchen, and cozy lounging spaces.
Drama begins in the foyer, which is bookended by backlit glass doors and a stately colonnade. A hint of light from the skylight-covered two-story stair draws visitors to the mahogany roof deck above. Guests who follow the stairs up to the deck pass through an innovative hands-free skylight built like a sailboat hatch.
At night, the space is energized with theater lighting that focuses attention on the couple’s African art collection. Sinuous walls, sandblasted glass, marble tiles, and cast-iron railings add to the sumptuous feel.
